I'm packing my grip and I'm leaving today because I'm taking a trip today chapter 14 which is on post-war American and and this is generally the fifties and we're going to start off with a little bit of Truman chapter in his decision to drop the atomic bomb and the Marshall Plan putting more money to try to get Europe back on it play it again and the military occupation of Germany all take place in the late 40s but it's trying to move America play War cultural war footage on to a peacetime footing now they come out of the depression in the thirties and and it was some to your about oh my gosh what if the economy starts the slide and go back down the drain again but but there was an odd thing that I think most people weren't expecting part of what happen when you sign up for the military when you signed it for a living there was something called the GI Bill of Rights end the end the Bill of Rights was given to every Soldier and and it would give them some so much until that win their service career had ended they would then have money when they got back to the States and so names of Americans who had been forced to save their money arrive back in the United States and this money would they could use to businesses and go to school and so many many of them went back to college on the GI Bill many people bought homes do hammer became President in 1952 one of the things that he pushed for with a national highway system and if you've ever seen the the sing movie Cars about the building of the highway system in and how all these small weird hotels in the towns were kind of bypass that's when this twoplex was during the 1950's when the national highway system got built in so many many of the interstates that are all around the country took place in California basically you had this this abundance of thousand square foot home 2 bedroom 1 bathroom homes popping up all over the San Fernando Valley was centrally started with all these thousand square foot homes that sold use their money to go buy these homes so the suburbs starting to come in where people didn't leave downtown they lived outside of town so then of course and so 1950s with Wezel on that one other thing that Harry Truman did in the Korean War got started 50lb also sign executive order desegregated the military sand sold from from 1950 or 1948 on the United States military has 50 segregated as well as anybody who contracts with the federal government to have an integrated Workforce also within the 1950s you have what is big scourges in the 1950s was polio  we had a President Franklin Roosevelt who was stricken with polio in the 1920s and you had in 1952 as many as 15,000 people who were would polio many many of them children there was not agreement on how people contracted polio so people thought oh my gosh I'm supposed to places for kids, gave your clothes if you've ever seen old pictures they were placed in on one treatment for this point but there's no cure for this in in Jungle vibe  salt developed cure for pain shortly after that there was a vaccine that you can only an dential today generally speaking you can't come to school without having the phone what other or cultural aspect that that starts to take place in the in the fifties as the rise of Television that television have been around since the say the 40s and but nobody on the television set and and if you ever see any of those old TV sets not very clear and there's nothing on television right and so people gave away television sets because they were trying to create people fox in the first television shows were old radio shows that were then put on television shows like Dragnet and the Green Hornet and those sorts of show  some of the first TV stores and that in the 50s were worse in the I Love Lucy folks in The Honeymooners one of the odd things that that television used to do is they would have a general program that that ran from probably six or seven in the morning until the 11 at 9 and then television when shut off  add and there were only maybe 6 or 7 Channel and one of the thing the news culture that is important to mention here is his you start yet this backlash against the same everybody lived in the suburbs and everybody here went to school and everybody knows and Boy Scouts and and everybody I have to sort of saying everybody live the same life and be someone of a rebellion away from lower to they wanted to put all that behind them and just create what they considered to be the sort of normal life add in the children of the service turn the baby boom era if you will started to say you know what this is great  and so you started to have look around for things that would different and so there was a a group of people if you've ever seen The Iron Giant cartoon for half the group called The beatniks poetry playing the bongo drums live for the moment so it's so the beatniks became a literary movement and and then the greatest cultural sensation of a generation came on also this time my kid out of two points sippy with a guitar and the net at 10 say rhythm and blues music song Mega disasters one of these first big songs was called which points actually written to be sung by a female and if you ever listen to that song you realized it sounded weird to have a male singer actually written on for woman and Big Mama Thornton to sing with Elvis Presley took back and rode that just turn down  Thornton  find ads from the rock and roll era  comes about that that many of this alarm this rhythm and blues music that was sung almost exclusively to African-American. being taken by men like seniors infinite make a fortune  so we'll look at that I want to know the song Don't over I'm going down and trying to get
